Tutorial 4 section 2

Tutorial 4   Section  2

Yesterday we basically drew the components of the door and put tenons on the rails. Now we will put mortises in the stiles  This is how the picture should currently look.

Now hide the three rails and select the right stile.  Select edit component and with the tape measure put guide marks at 3 1/2 inches from the bottom on the front edge of the left side, then 10 ¾ inches from the bottom, then 32 ½ inches from the bottom and finally ½ inch from the top.  See picture.

Do not hesitate to zoom in or out, orbit or do what is necessary to get a better view when following these instructions

Now using the same procedure used when making tenons draw guidelines put a guide mark ¼ in. along the lines. Then draw rectangles, 2.5 inches long and ¼ in. wide for the two top rails.  Draw two rectangles ¼ in wide and three inches long for the mortises in the bottom rail.  Now take the push pull tool and push the top mortise in 1 inch.  You can now take the push pull tool and simply double click on each of the other three mortises.

You have completed the mortises on the right stile, now if you delete guides and unhide everything you will notice that since you are using components you have also put mortises in the left stile, but they are on the wrong edge..

You can remedy that by selecting the left stile, right click and choose flip along.  You are now given a choice of which axis you want to use, the answer you choose depends upon which axes you used when you drew the stile.  In this case I choose to flip along the red axis and the mortises are positioned correctly.

We now have the door completed except for tacking on the screen and screwing the handle on, and we are not going to do that here.

I would like to make a cutting diagram / cut list, to take to the shop, so lets do that.

First using the arrow draw a selection box around the entire door and select everything.

Now take the move tool and click on the lower left corner of the door.  Move the copy off to the right and you have two doors. At this point  just take the move tool and go crazy, line up the stiles rotate the rails line them up and place dimensions on them.  See below

Uh-OH When I drew the dimensions I see I made a mistake.  I wanted the door to be 6 feet 8 inches, instead I made it 68 inches. The door is drawn a full foot too short.  With Sketchup using components this is but a minor problem. Just select any of the four stiles in the drawing select (edit component) and using the push pull tool pull the top up 12 inches.  See below.

All the stiles are lengthened even the dimension text is changed.  You now can move the mortise (wouldn’t it be great if you could do that in the real world) and move the upper rail to the top.  With a project of this size this is the only cut list you will ever need.

Well that is the end of tutorial number four.  Hope it is some help to you.

Any feedback is always appreciated.
