Tutorial 3 section 4

Tutorial 3 Book Case (section 4)

In this section we will wrap the top of the case with crown molding and add the top.  I think this is important.  It is well designed application of moldings and other decorative elements that make our drawings pop.  They help us and our customers to visualize  the finished product..

There are many different versions of moldings available for downloading from different web sites.  In this case I have decided to draw up our own version.

Using the rectangle tool begin by drawing a 1.5 inch square at the top back corner of the right side.  The square should be at a 90 degree angle to the side.

Use the tape measure to place guide marks.  First place a mark on the top edge ½ inch  from the upper left corner, next ¼ inch down the right side.  Now go to the lower right corner and place a mark ½ inch up the left side and ¼ inch across the bottom.  (see picture)

Now connect the two ½ inch marks with a strait line.  Use the arc tool and click on the upper ¼ inch guide mark now click on the last mark , a line will appear and as you move the mouse the line will bend creating an arc.  Draw an arc similar to the picture below and click to finish.  We have now created the profile of the crown molding.

Now erase the lines necessary to make the drawing look like the picture below.  Make the molding into a group.

Now open the group by right clicking on the molding and selecting edit group.  With the group open, draw a line around three sides of the book case beginning at the bottom corner of the molding.  Make sure the line remains parallel to the top edge of the case.

Now take the follow me tool click and follow the line around the three sides.  The crown should extrude all around the top, like the picture below.  This can get a bit tricky if it does not work correctly the first time just hit undo and try again.  Just make sure you are in the edit group mode.

Once you have the crown molding completed it is time to place the top.  Just draw a rectangle the size of the four outside corners of the crown molding.  Pull it up to 1 inch thick, then take the push pull tool and pull out the three edges 1 additional inch.  The picture should now look like the one below

That is the end of section 4.  Save your work we are not quite finished.

Did you make it this far?
