This is section two of tutorial 3.
The picture below is where we left it last time. We will now work on the sides and shelves.
First draw a rectangle the size of the opening above, 10 ¾ inches by 28 inches. Make it into a component and open it. Pull it up ¾ inch, and it should look like the picture below. Close the shelf component
Now open the component for either side and pull it up 71 inches. The other side should follow. We are now going to place the shelves. First move the bottom shelf up so that the top of the shelf is 4 inches up. That requires a move of 3 ¼ inches. The picture should now look like the one below.
Now take the move tool and click the upper left corner on the front of the shelf, press and release the control key and move the copy up. Type in 63.75 and hit enter now type /5 and hit enter. You should now have six shelves 12 inches apart with 4 inches at the top and bottom. You can do the math later.
At this point erase the dimensions if you put them in to check spacing.
Now zoom way in on the left end of the upper shelf . select the left side and select edit component. Draw a ¼ by ¾ rectangle on the side just at the end of the shelf.
Now take the push pull tool and push the dado in 10.25 inches. Now if you have the same view as shown below, you can see the end of the shelf inside the dado. Now while the side component is open repeat the procedure for all six shelves. You will see that you have drawn the dados for both sides. Next close the side component and open the component for the top shelf.
Pull the end of the shelf out ¼ inch into the dado. Now do the same for the other end of the shelf. Remember you can just double click on the end of the shelf, it will remember the last operation..
At this point all the dados are drawn and both ends of each shelf should be pulled out into the grooves
That is the end of this section. Be sure to save your drawing.

Okay, I need some guidance in tutorial 3, step 2. I have made the bookcase sides and the shelf. I have expanded the sides to 71". Now I'm trying to place the shelves. It says to move the shelf up, but where did the shelf come from? I made one, made it a component but then closed it, is that what I'm supposed to use?
Thanks

Steve,
If I understand where you are,you have made the bottom shelf snd located it in position. now you are about to make copies of that shelf to fill the bookcase
"Now take the move tool and click the upper left corner on the front of the shelf, press and release the control key and move the copy up. Type in 63.75 and hit enter now type /5 and hit enter. You should now have six shelves 12 inches apart with 4 inches at the top and bottom. You can do the math later."
In the above instruction from the tutorial you will be making 5 copies of the existing shelf and placing them. Remember once you click on an object with the move tool, then press and release the control key a small plus sign appears near the move symbol this means that you will be moving a copy and the origional will remain in place.

Okay, I understand now, I didn't realize the shelf was to made within the framework of the bookcase. I thought I was making a component to be inserted later. Thinking always gets me in trouble!! ![]()
