Tutorial 2 section 4

Now that we have drawn our table with components, we have the ability to show it in many different ways that would be helpful for shop work.  Remember you will not mess up your original drawing unless you save something over it.  If you make changes that you want to save, just use a new name and the original will remain intact.  In all the views shown here I just manipulated the drawing, exported the picture, then reloaded the original.  (I did not have to move the pieces back into place)

The view below is simply an exploded view, just moved the pieces apart by clicking on them with the move tool.  If you wish you could add dimensions explanations or whatever.

In this view I made sort of a mini cut list / diagram.  I hid everything except one of each component rotated and re arranged them, added dimensions and quantities of each.  Those guys who think they can do it faster with a pencil and paper,  I’d like to see them try this.

This view is a wire frame view of the mortise configuration on one on the legs showing dimensions.

This is an X-ray view of one of the corners showing the joinery.  Once again tough to do with a pencil and paper.

There are many other ways of displaying these drawings these were just a few ideas to get you started.  Just do what works best for you in your shop.

That is it for this tutorial.  I learned a good deal just preparing it.  I hope you got something out of it as well.

Re: Tutorial 2 section 4

I think a few steps are missing here. I tried moving the parts but you need to combine them together somehow. I can get 2 sides combined but not everything that makes up a leg or top or rail. Is it possible you can explain these steps in a little more detail.

No steps missing, if you made each part into a component.  you just select the component you wish to move and move it.  Make sure you do not double click and open the component

Maybe the part missing is the mortises in the legs but they're easy enough to do at this point.  So far, the best tutorial on Sketchup that I've come across.  I've tried several times over the past year to learn this but this is the first time I've really ever understood any of it.
