Welcome to the NEW Woodturning Forum

[ Edited ]

Welcome to WOOD Online's woodturning forum hosted by John Lucas. We invite you to post questions on turning, harvesting wood for turnings, turning techniques, or anything else related to this wonderfully addictive hobby.

Since turning is such a visual art, we encourage you to add images to your posts of what your turning, your turning techniques, your harvesting process, or your turning center. Within the next few weeks, we'll have a new turning gallery as well at WOOD Online. Although on most of our forums we strive for a Questions and Answer approach, in this forum we encourage you to post images of projects in process or your step-by-step method for creating your specialty turnings. For example, see my ebony collared quartersawn sycamore bowl and turning center below.

And finally, don't forget to review our turning techniques and turned project plans in the WOOD Store.

Re: Welcome to the NEW Woodturning Forum

I am so glad that the Turning Forum is back. I do enjoy it very much.

Now, if I could only get caught up with other projects so I can un-bury my lathe, I'll start turning things for Christmas.

Re: Welcome to the NEW Woodturning Forum

Darn, I'm dying to reply with some great woodturning tips or photos but don't have any right now.   I've been working hard to turn Box Elder log that was 19" in diameter and 4 feet long into as many bowls as I can.  So far I have 10 ( I blew up one small bowl and one small hollow vessel.   I did manage to get 2 18" bowls.  I've been learning to use the McNaughton coring tools (some homemade by me) so I was able to core out some bowls.    I had some punky spots that caused me some problems so I made smaller bowls and 1 hollow vessel out of the last 1/4 of the log.

I hope to have some photos later this week.   Sanding and finishing has been a pain.   I didn't have enough time to wait for them to dry after rough turning so I turned them to completion.  Of course that means I had to let them dry for a few days before sanding.   They warp so sanding has to be done with the lathe off.   fortunately I have a vacuum chuck which makes holding the bowl easier but sanding is still very slow.

Thanks Marlen for putting the turning board back on.

Turning has got very popular with woodworkers  of all kinds since there is such a variety of lathes  available now in various price ranges and a great array of features on them .

Thanks, Marlen!  Putting this forum back is sure to make quite a few people happy.  I also like your approach to getting the best of it by asking for pictures.

Thanks for the Turning Forum!  I do not post often but read every day so glad it is back.  I have learned a lot from the members that do post.

Re: Welcome to the NEW Woodturning Forum

Thanks Marlen for having a woodturning site. I also hope this forum is a little faster than the old site. Like I mention I am still on dial up and will probably never see high speed in uor area.
