More ash wood

I caught the tree guys just in time today. They could haul this one one block to my house or a half block the other direction to the truck. Since the bobcat had it in the bucket I convinced them to take it to my place. Guess it helps to know the guys removing the tree. The main trunk was probably 40" diameter and too big for me , but this was one of the limbs off the main trunk about 10' up. This should keep me turning for a couple of weeks anyway.

Well I just couldn't let that log set in the driveway. I had to cut some off and try turning it today, about 4 hours after the tree was cut down. Now I think that qualifies as green wood.

Here is what I made so far with it for fun.

Not only free wood but delivered to your doorstep.  How lucky can one get.  And by-the-way, those are nice bowls.

Nice turning....I have to go check my face in the mirror and make sure it hasn't turned all green.

Ashlog3.JPGTurned up another batch from a log cut off the small end of the log. I still have a lot of log left to turn, but it sure turns nice and the wood has some great color and grain. The top left bowl is 14 1/2"  X 4" tall.

Re: More ash wood

Did a little more cutting on the big log. Cut off 2 more chunks then slabbed them into bowl blank material. These will make 16" bowl blanks for my lathe, they range from 4"-7" thick so will easily be able to core a bowl or two from each blank. Some of the chunks are closer to 18" so will get some turning blocks off the sides after the blank.

Re: More ash wood

Now here are some pictures of cutting up the last chunk just to the right of the big crouch. I am using a Poulan 3400, 46cc, saw with a 20" bar. I do not have any problem with power, just takes awhile to cut. This took me just over 30 minutes to cut this log into the slabs.
