Interesting find...

Today I stopped at surf shop by the beach. Inside there were many small items that drew my attention.

Post cards made of two peaces of Hawaiian native tree each being 1/200" thiin. Pretty amazing.

The next item was bowl with lid. Made out of coconut!! Has anyone ever turned coconut? The grain was just awesome. Bowl it self was very light. Size of it about 4" wide.

Re: Interesting find...

I imagine no one has tried turning coconut.

It does have a very nice texture and apperance.

Thanks anyway.

Re: Interesting find...

Since the coconut is hollow and the shell is only about 1/4 in. thick, the bowls probably aren't turned.  You could use pieces as inlay - some interesting possibilities here - or laminate some smaller pieces of shell together to make miniature bowls and vases.

Re: Interesting find...

Guess I haven't found too many coconuts on the ground around the trees in my yard to try. My ash and maple trees don't have them.

It would be something to try if I had access to them. Aren't some of them close to round that would maybe give enough thickness to turn a bowl from.

It might be more like the guy turning the potatoes on his lathe though.
