G0490 Assembly Complete

[ Edited ]

It's done, it's up and running.  At least it turned on and ran smoothly.  I'm too tired to try a piece of wood in it tonight.  We started at 6:00 pm and had the table on the base by 6:30.  My crew left (we're all on call, so no beer drinking), then I spent until midnight putting it together and cleaning the gunk off.  Assembly is actually not difficult, it's the cleaning of the copious amount of cosmoline it comes coated with that took so much time.  Glad I had a large supply of fake credit cards to scrape it with.  Then spraying and wiping Zep Citrus Degreaser.  But it's clean now!

Bits of advice:  Download the manual from the Grizzly site.  The one that comes with it is screwed up.  The assembly sequence starts with putting the lift wheel on the base and jumps to putting the table on the base.  There are a couple of correction sheets with the manual, but they still lack all the information.  The online version is the one to follow.  Remove both the front and rear panels when putting the table on the base.  Two of the required eight bolts are hidden behind the dust chute and the only way to reach them is via the front.  Makes it easier when adjusting the motor tension, too.  And the drive pulleys and belt are not the V-belt variety, but are ribbed.  Lastly, the fence angle scale needs an additional washer under the mounting tab  to allow adjustment for the reading to be correct.  Not the little plastic indicator, but the scale itself.  Knives were set correctly, and the parallelism was set.  The stops for the fence did require adjustment, however.  I also found a bit of a burr on the aluminum inserts around the blades that took a little fine filing to remove.  Nothing serious, but enough that it might have left a scratch

Did I mention lots of gunk??  Have plenty of rags and paper towels!  You'll smell like you spent the day in an armory when you're done.

I treated it to a nice rubdown with Boeshield T-9 before I quit and gave it a brand new gurney cover to sleep under.  Tomorrow, it's truth or dare time to see how it really works.

Congrats John!  Thanks for the assembly info; I'm hoping mine will be here before I leave for Thanksgiving on Wednesday, but I haven't received tracking info yet.

No problem.  Another thing to watch is attaching the fence.  It's heavy and has a mind of its own until you get the two cap bolts seated.  Keep a good grip on it or you might end up with pinched fingers.  It would actually be easier if you had someone else hold it while you fished for the mounting holes.

Late this morning, I finally got to run a piece of wood, a short piece of rough cedar, on it to try it out.  HORROR....GASP...a line appears on the outfeed table.  I look at the board and it's got a little ridge running down the length.  Used a magnifier and a popsicle stick and found one of the blades has a tiny nick.  CARUMBA!   So I called Grizzly, explained the situation to a charming young lady and was pleasantly surprised that they will send me a new set of blades, even though they don't normally consider them a warranty item.  So kudo's to Grizzly for keeping a happy customer happier.

I was considering modifying the dust port to a 6" for my G0548 DC, but borrowing the 4" adapter I made for my router table, the 4" port works just fine.  There's only about 12" of 4" line before it opens up into the 6" hose, anyways.

I don't see any pics, John.  Didn't happen.  :smileywink:

If your jointer is similar to my DJ20, then the larger port may not buy you too much.  Maybe 10%?  If you're bored one day then maybe take a look at that.....but only if you're bored.  :smileyhappy:

By the way, are there any other tools in that shop, or is it just the jointer?:smileyhappy:
