I understand the risks and legal ramifications of stretching the suggested safety limits of any tool, but I'm curious if anyone knows if a 6" blade will phyically fit in within the shroud of the 5-1/2" Skil HD5510? The reason I ask is that this saw has a 1/2" arbor, and only a few companies offer 5-1/2" blades...most have 24 teeth. Freud has a 6" D0640X with 1/2" arbor and 40T, so I wondered if it'll fit in the space?

Why not make a 6" disk out of ¼ in plywood and see if it fits?

You will have to remove the blade guard to make it fit.

It isn't worth the risk, Scott.
The space between blade and guard also provides for dust and chips to move. When that space is limited, or hardly there, the potential for trouble is very present.

I just knew someone would come along and say something logical and rational, and burst my bubble!
Sometimes a mind is a terrible thing. As always....thanks for the wisdom.

On my Craftsman cordless 5 1/2" saw the arbor hole is a little over 3/8" probably metric. I do not know if they have one for a 1/2" arbor. Roly

To answer my own question....no, a 6" blade will not fit within the confines of the blade guard on the Skil HD5510. It'll definitely fit without the guard, but that's not something I'm willing to suggest as an acceptable solution.

Our local HD has 5 1/2" Avanti blades in two arbor sizes. 10mm and 5/8". The 5/8" has a bushing to reduce it to 1/2". These are the Chinese blades distributed by a company with an Atlanta, GA address. Just wondering....since these are showing up at HD could they be the company that has taken over the Avanti name after Freud discontinued their Avanti line?
