So, this morning, Iggy asked me what jigs I like in the workshop.
"Jigs are nice, but I prefer to slow dance with my wife."
"Not THOSE jigs, dummy. Woodworking jigs!"
"You mean there are special dances for woodworking?"
Can someone explain to me why Iggy rolled his eyes and walked away from me?
Oh, before he threw his hands up in disgust, he gave me this week's list - the top five jigs you should have in your woodworking shop:
- A panel cutting jig. Getting square cuts on a large workpiece at a table saw is difficult with the small stock miter gauge. An accurate and infinately more capable panel cutting jig can be built for pennies worth of scrap in an hour or so and give years of outstanding service.
- A plunge router mortising jig. Why shell out money for new tooling when you have the ultimate multi-tasker in your shop already? Built one of these, and accurate smooth walled mortises are a snap.
- Some kind of happy jig you can dance when you finish your project.. wait, am I mixing up my jigs again?
- A bench hook. This jig does double duty - you can use it to secure work you are cutting by hand, and you can use it as a shooting board for a hand plane. Very clever little jig.
- A knob or door pull jig. There's nothing worse than getting to the end of a project and blowing it by installing the door knobs or pulls in the wrong palce. A jig ensures that everything will line up accurately.
