Hey all,
The wife pulled out the baby stuff from the basement tonight as the our family will grow by 1 any day now. One of the jumpy/bouncy seat things is white plastic. Some of the pieces have yellowed. Is there any way to whiten them? What causes this? Thanks in advance.

You may try light bleach-water mix or better yet try some Windex.
Yellowing could be caused by anything... air, enviroment, dust, age...
Congratulation on new addition :-))

Thanks a lot guys. I'll give those a shot. It seems the before-baby list keeps getting longer as time gets shorter... Wish me luck!

A lot of plastics, particularly older stuff, get brittle over time. I would suggest that along with the color change this has likely occurred in this case. Sounds like something that should go to the dump rather than placing the child at risk.

Plastics contain a plasticizer, to provide flexibility, which migrates out of the plastic over time. When sufficient plasticizier has migrated, the plastic becomes brittle. The yellowing, I presume, is just fading of the pgiments in the plastic.

I always figured that the yellowing was a result of uv rays...many of the white outlets have been replaced in my 18-year old house because they turned to an ivory color. The replacements had a uv inhibitor listed on the box.
