Should I just cut the plug and hard wire it?

Mornin All -

We're replacing our vent-a-hood with a microhood.  The old one was hard wired in.  The microwave says it must be plugged in.  I don't mind hard wiring it...but if I have to cut a hole for an outlet, I guess I will.  I just don't see the problem though if it's hot wired...but, that's why I'm asking the question anyway :smileyhappy:

Thanks,

Troy

We've had 3 Microwave / hoods.  All were Plug ins.  Since you already have the wire there from the old hood, just bring it up to the cabinet above the new Microwave and add a surface mounted box.  That is where the connection is normally make for the Microwave hood. I wouldn't cut it, that would just void the warrenty.

The other issue is this, if you CUT the plug you are most likely to void any warrantee and/or recourse if something were to go wrong (fire?)

Drill the hole and PLUG it in.

step one; understand the problem - the correct answer will follow

Good point... Didn't think about the warranty.  I'll just drill out a little bigger hole for the plug to fit through, run it up into the upper cabinet and put in an outlet.

Thanks for the replies ya'll.

The main reason to have it plugged in an outlet is so it can be physically disconnected for service. No safety minded service rep would touch it if it was hard wired without first disconnecting the cord.

And ... last, but not least, most likely, code most likely demands it be a plug-in.

Dishwashers and garbage disposers don't come with a cord. They were designed to be hardwired.

I've added plugs to all of the Garbage Disposals I've put in.  Most manufacturers sell them as an add.  For the $5 it's worth it.
