A Work In Progress - New Fireplace

[ Edited ]

For the past several weeks I've been working on a gas fireplace installation for our family room that's going to be our big family Christmas gift this year....it's pretty much from scratch, and required the building of a chase for the firebox and vent pipe, 45' of gas line, fireplace installation, inspections, hearth, surround, and a new oak mantel.  It's still not quite completed, but I can see daylight at the end of the tunnel now...just need to put on a couple of clear finish coats that I should get to this week, and then my wife needs to make a decision with the surround material (the blue stuff is just drywall).  It may be a while before that decision is made, but it's functioning and we're using it as is for now.  I'll post completed follow pics when it's done.

Very nice Scott :-))

What type of wood did you end up using for this?

Christmas garland will look nice over this.

Looking really nice Scott. I like the wood in the half round inset. Very nice contrast in grains.

Thanks guys.  Most of it is "wine vat" QSWO from the Widmer Wineries, interspersed with some red oak that my brother's FIL gave me.

I LOVE the mantel. What is the base? Did you do that yourself?

I'm grooving on your new fireplace in a serious way, Scott.   NICELY handled!

So.. you still think you're in your (sixth? seventh?) rookie season as a woodworker?   Nope.   This one proves that's no longer the case.

NICELY done, sir.    I eagerly await the completed shots.

Thanks Matt and - Kind words for sure.  Yeah...I've graduated to my 8th "rookie" season!  The hearth base is a "manmade stone" (aka concrete attractively done).

Nowthats what I call sweat equity, Great Job !!! the CFO should give you alot of atta boy's for a Job well done and you'll be roasting warm this X-Mas. Though the Mantel is a simple design it has a very Rich appearance, nice choice on the QSWO by the way.

Still no surround between the firebox and the mantel, but I've at least painted the blue board with some black paint so it won't be an eyesore while we wait for final decision...which could be well after Christmas at this pace!  Here's the latest with one clear coat...I'll add at least one more, and will glue in the molding at the base after the final surround material is installed.
