Question about Excavator Plan

The plans are not clear about when to shape the different parts of the bucket.  After shaping the inside, do you shape the sides, then glue them on then shape the back of the bucket? Or do you shape the inside, glue the side blanks on then shape all three pieces at once? The drawings would indicate the second way, the photo might indicate the first and the instructions just don't say.

Hey, Strebor

Just a quickie:  I slid your question over to the General Woodworking forum.   The Announcements & Help forum is for folks to get assistance with the new forums.

Glue parts A & B together (the inside of the bucket) and shape them as shown in Photo A on page 63. Then cut the 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" blanks for the bucket sides (C), and adhere the pattern to one of them. Stack the bucket sides together with their edges flush and drill the 3/16" holes where indicated on the pattern. Now glue and clamp these blanks to the A/B assembly as shown in Photo B. The dashed lines on the pattern will help you align the sides (C) with the edges of the A/B assembly, Once this assembly dries, take it to the bandsaw and shape the outside of the bucket.

Hope that clears things up for you. Best of luck on your build!

Re: Question about Excavator Plan

I apparently misread the directions and made the bucket in 4 pieces. I think you are supposed to cut out the pattern for the two back pieces, glue them on your stock, and cut as one piece. Very unclear instructions IMHO. I found several things in the instructions and the material list that could have been clearer.
