PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!!!!! If it is not sawstop more then likely it does not have that technology and I am sure somewhere in the owners manual it said keep hands away from spinning blade or be sure to unplug the machine before changing a blade or installing one. yeah maybey it did not say anything like when making a cut use a pushstick,or maybey it does. so maybey all the manufactures of cutting tools need to do is add a statement in the owners manual that says this saw does not have quick break tecnology,or on the box they should have or in the owners manual have not responsible for any mishaps use at your own risk. I think if they make it a reqirement that all table saws have that technology then we are going to have to pay more then some saws are worth. It was a unfortunate thing that happened and I do not wish it on anyone but why does everyone have to pay for one persons misfortune after all this hobby or buissness for some does not come without some degree of risk. Saw stops technology does not prevent kickback so what if that happens and ends up doing damage to a persons body to the point of dying then what. Well I had to vent so I have in conclusion lets just all try to be a little safer.

This is ludicrous!!! I want a Sawstop, but our litigeous (sp?) society holds no one accountable for their actions.

As I see (and heard) it:
1. Sawstop developed the technology, then
a) wrapped it in enough broad patents to prevent anyone else from developing anything similar.
b) tried to get existing manufacturers to buy it and re-engineer their machines to include it. For whatever reason they decide not to. This could have been:
- SS was charging a monopolistic royalty
- At that time everyone knew table saws were dangerous and including this technology might open older machines (that could not be retrofit) to lawsuits like this
- They believed adding several hundred dollars to a machine would price it out of a competitive market
- All the above
c) Failing at 1b, SS tried to get legislation to require such devices (at which see 1a)
d)Failing at 1c, developed and marketed their own machine. One that has a $800-1000 premium over comparable machines without such feature.
2. Let's say that Joe Garage wants to buy a $500 or less table saw. Would he be willing to pay an $800 premium for the stop feature? Methinks not. So what is the manufacturer supplying to big boxes to do, produce one model with and one model without? Develop a black market for used machines? Same liability when Joe Garage damages himself because he's cheaped out.
3. Suppose all machines include the feature. When it fires, you have just ruined a blade and require installation of a new actuator and brake. At that point, it is probably cheaper to just replace the saw. How would Joe Garage feel about this when he's just tried to saw some overly wet big box construction lumber and has a false positive fire?
4. The manufacturers are woefully late at introducing riving knives, but they are now starting. And they have not given much engineering thought to making a reasonable blade guard, hence most people find them the pain they are, remove them and throw them in a corner. Even the instructional photos make the laughable comment "blade guard removed for photographic clarity."

Too many times judges/jury's reward stupidity. Common sense seems to be missing in a lot of decisions handed down.

Well all I got to say is "lawyers suck and jurors can be stupid". If this is the way it's going to work then someone should sue the injured party for not buying the saw stop.
"The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot.. it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder it is well to add something for the risk you run. And if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better"

We live in a society that is out of control. No one takes responsibilitly for their actions ( stupidity )But,the guy who will pay the most for this decesion in the future will be the guy with tablesaws, and employee's.I'm sure if the decesion is up held in an appeal. Our freind's at O.S.H.A will be the next to require all cutting machinery to be equipt with the saw stop technology.
Just a thought,
Jeff
