First Round of Cutting Boards for Christmas

Well, I wrapped up the first batch of 16 cutting boards for Christmas gifts. This year I am making a couple of different designs now that I got my Jet 16-32 Drum Sander which makes it possible since my Ridgid 13" Planer has a tendency to tear out the grain on some pieces of wood.

I made some End Grain boards using a mix of Maple, Cherry, Walnut, Padauk and Purple Heart. I also made some 3D cutting boards using Maple, Cherry, Walnut and Padauk. The 3D boards were made with 1 1/4" stock and the End Grain boards with 3/4" stock. I still have to make about 10-20 more before I start working on Christmas Ornaments on the lathe.

These designs I came across online this past year. Here are the websites that I got the ideas from.

Beautiful Allen! I like the 3d looking ones the best. You have some lucky friends. What type of finish are you using?    Again, great job. Very nice looking boards.

Well thanks Allen; now my cutting boards are going to look so plain!  Great job on them!  You must buy mineral oil by the gallon!

By the way, did anyone else look at Allen's 3D link?  Isn't that thing going to explode, or am I missing something?

Not quite sure what you mean about exploding. I re-checked the link and it works fine.

Re: First Round of Cutting Boards for Christmas

[ Edited ]

Thanks for the nice comments gentlemen.

The finish is mineral oil only and I buy it from my local Wal Mart pharmacy at about $2 per pint bottle. I used 1 1/2 pint bottles to finish all of these boards as those end grain boards really soak it all up. The 3D boards are side grain so they don't absorb as much. (On Edit: I put "quart" in my original post but it should have been "pint") I found that for the end grain boards that the purple heart gets really so dark that it is had to distinguish it from the walnut, so I will use more padauk as it shows up well once it gets oiled. I will be stopping this morning at my local hardwood dealer and pick up some more wood to finish things up. I will be out of the shop until tuesday so I hope to get the rest finished up by the end of the month so I can start my lathe turnings.
