Re: First Round of Cutting Boards for Christmas

I actually meant the board itself.  The builder wrapped it in purpleheart, which seems to me that the expansion would pull the miters apart.  Perhaps "explode" was a bit dramatic.:smileysurprised:

Ahhh.....I was wondering the same thing as I saw him wrap it as I was wondering about expansion/contraction. But to each his own.

One thing that I did learn about the 3D boards and gluing them up is that the biscuits are a definet benefit. I thought him overly cautious by using biscuits so I did mine without the  biscuits and I had a number of problems getting things to line up as they would shift as you tightened the clamps. Next batch I will try using the biscuits to see if it makes things easier.

I do have a suggestion for you. These can also make beautiful small tables. Make them them thinner and add legs.zig zag sm Some others that I have made were too beautiful to cut on, but made great small tables.

Re: First Round of Cutting Boards for Christmas

Ron,

I like your table top idea and will keep it in mind. My daughter would love one in her room so I may make one for her.

While I make cutting boards to be use, the reality is that most don't use them due to their appearance. Some will just display them while others will use them for serving trays and such. But my Mother in Law came up with a solution so that she could both use and display the board I made for her last year. She cuts on the back side and then displays the front side. Being that she lives in a double wide, her space is at a premium so this works well for her. My wife does the same with her cutting board and I tell everyone that sell or give one to to do the same. It really helps to seal the deal when they realize that they can justify their purchase as it can be used.

Re: First Round of Cutting Boards for Christmas

Mostly for gifts as I won't be doing any craft shows this year. That was way too much like last year and I got burned out a bit even though I recouped all of the materials and start up costs and it paid for our kid's Christmas gifts. I will be making some to sell at my wife's school as my stuff does real well there. Captive teachers with no time to shop and they love hand made stuff, so it is good for me. I should be able to recoup most of my materials costs for all of this stuff I am doing for Christmas. I went out today and picked up some more 5/4 maple, cherry, walnut and 3 bf of 4/4 padauk for accents that I will rip thinner. So that was about $150 right there. Good wood does get expensive around here, as you well know.

Allen, you are sure to get a lot of comments about being to pretty to use. there is a paper on the usda website about using cutting boards, explaining that wooden boards are as safe as any others if cared for properly. if you included the use instructions, the recipients would know you intended them to be used.

if it is not safe, STOP!!! IT IS HAZARDOUS

Sweeeeeeet

Those are dandy-looking cutting boards Allen.

I would be proud to be one of the recipients.
