Cross cut sled

Am going to build a new xcut sled and would like to go with two runners.  Any suggestions out there as to how to go about this, size, materials, wood vs. metal runners etc?  Anyone know of plans that I could use.  Thank you.

Re: Cross cut sled

Wood Magazine has some plans, can't remember the issue off the top of my head, I'll check back later this evening to see if anyone has given it to you yet. Materials, 1/2" baltic birch or mdf. For runners I prefer metal. Depth, I made mine to handle a 24" panel.

Re: Cross cut sled

To my knowledge ( I've been wrong before) WOOD did not do any articles on dual slide sleds. I built mine some 10 years ago and it was from an article in American Woodworker in 1999. It's a dual slide, the base is 41" x 29" which includes the 1 1/2" sides, there's 25" clearance inside measurement. It was made from 3/4" plywood It's excellent for cutting large panels as you can wedge the panel with a block and it gives you one less thing to worry about. Unfortunately the magazine does not have it listed nor do they offer anyway to get copies of past articles. If your looking at something this big email me and I'll give you some basic information and a picture of it.

Re: Cross cut sled

Weelis -

I have (2) sleds...90 degree crosscut and 45 degree miter...both have two runners.  I used 3/4 x 3/8 brass bar stock on both of them.  Works great!  If I were to re-do them, I would do them the same way!

Dave.

There's gotta be a better way
