Contractor grade Mobile Crane

Re: Wood Mag issue 185 on same subject.  Directions call for drilling 1/4" holes in the hoist sides (dwg 5a) and later using these same holes as guides for drilling 3/16" holes through the mast.  Where is the accuracy in this?

As the holes are for 8x32 all thread rod to fasten the sides to the mast it would make for a sloppy fit and put undue stress on the 2 screws in the hoist base.  I followed the directions, like Mama said I should, so I have the problem to solve.  I will just up size the 8x32 rod with 1/4x20 and go from there.

If no one who has built the mobile crane answers your response fairly soon I will pass it along to the editors for response.

Re: Contractor grade Mobile Crane

I just check with Jeff Mertz, the project designer, and here is his reply:

The holes should be identified as 3/16" for the two holes that are used for attaching the hoist sides to the mast assembly.
