removing spindle from chair

I am starting a refinishing project on a spindle back chair. The back was very loose, with some spindles even coming out of the holes. I have disassemble the back, except  for one well glued spindle that  I cannot get out of the seat. I don't want to break it, but I think it needs to come out, so that I can get all of the old finish off. Also if I leave it in I'm sure I'll break it before I'm done.

Re: removing spindle from chair

First, make sure that that spindle has not had some sort of pin or nail added to keep it in it's socket.   If not, you can use some heat and moisture to loosen the glue.  Then a few raps with a rubber mallet, etc. have a good chance of separating the joint.
