If you haven't noticed already, we have the ability to 'tag' each forum post.
What that means in practice is that you can select the tab option and apply a label to the post. So if, say, it's a post about wood turning, then you can tag it as 'turning'. Or it could be 'scroll sawing'. Or 'finishing secrets', or any other thing you'd like to keep tabs on.
THEN... the point to the excersize becomes a little clearer. Let's say that you wanted to check out posts about wood turning. Go to the COMMUNITY page and on the left you'll see a box for TOP TAGS. And at the bottom of that you'll see "view all'.
Click to view all, and then you'll be presented with all of the tag names that have been created thus far. Then select, say, the turning tab and it'll present all of the posts that have been tagged as 'turning'.
The point to all of this is that you folks have the ability to do some intelligent sorting on the FRONT side, so that it's easier to search through the posts on the BACK side. And there's nothing preventing you from dropping a tag or two on any post you see. You don't have to have been the author.
The tagging process is only as complete as you guys choose to make it. If a post sits out there all lonely and without a tag, then it won't be searchable under the tags process.
In all - it's just another way of sorting through the noise. And the cool thing is that you guys define how effective it is by choosing to tag the posts (er.... or not!).
